The aorta has come into its own; it is now widely accepted that the aorta is “much more than a tube.” We realize that the aorta is an active hemodynamic organ, essentially, in concert with the left ventricle, “playing a game of catch” with the stroke volume on each and every heartbeat. We realize that, rather than being an inert conduit, the aortic wall harbors a vibrant symphony of active molecular and physiological activities. The score of this symphony, we now realize, is largely written in genetic terms; however, environmental factors and drug therapy have the ability to alter this musical score substantially.
